Project overview
The new National Train Control Centre, developed behind Heuston Station, has been designed as a highly secure and hi-tech facility. Taking 27 months to construct, it comprises of a 5,500 m² building constructed over a partial basement, with five floors, a backup energy building, and a Security Guardhouse. The facility also includes the co-location of the emergency response unit of An Garda Síochána, plus the traffic control arrangements operated by Dublin City Council, efficiently handling approximately 800 – 1,000 emergency calls daily from the public in Dublin.
BB7 Response
BB7 were involved from the earliest stages of the project through to completion/handover. Initially, our input facilitated the design development of the project up to and past planning and into the detailed design and pre-tender stages. Liaison with key stakeholders, including the local approving authority, was an important consideration throughout. A key aspect of the fire strategy was agreeing on a particular cause and effect that met the needs of such an important piece of infrastructure in relation to the signalling of live trains on the network vs ensuring that an adequate level of safety was provided for the persons within the building.
Benefits of service
BB7’s early involvement ensured seamless design development, regulatory compliance, and proactive issue resolution, streamlining the transition from design to construction. Our effective stakeholder liaison balanced operational needs with safety requirements, contributing to the project’s successful completion.
