Project overview
The Smurfit Building, operated by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, is located on the grounds of Beaumont Hospital in North Dublin City. The building serves as a hub for teaching, laboratory work, and office space. The project involved a three-storey extension to the existing Smurfit Building, along with the renovation of a section of the original structure to create a new student concourse, linking the existing building with the extension.
BB7 Response
The existing building was kept live during the construction period and due to the extension, some existing escape routes were temporary unavailable for which BB7 was appointed to provide an interim fire strategy to ensure that in the event of an evacuation the occupants were provided sufficient exit capacity.
The main design challenge of the building was the atrium and the use of glazing in the teaching and laboratory areas. BB7 developed a strategy that enclosed the accommodation areas with smoke-retardant construction/glazing, eliminating the need for costly fire-resistant glazing. Additionally, a smoke temperature control system was implemented in the atrium designed to maintain temperatures below the failure threshold of the smoke-retardant glazing, providing further substantial cost savings.
Benefits of service
BB7 provided dedicated fire engineering and access consultancy throughout the project, ensuring the fire strategy was effectively implemented through regular site inspections led by experienced specialists. Our proactive approach fostered clear communication, swift issue resolution, and seamless integration of fire safety measures, delivering a safe and cost-effective solution tailored to the client’s needs.
